Networking - Churches
I use this part of Social Notes to promote businesses
and networking opportunities that I think might be of
interest to all of you.  If you haven't yet sent me a
blurb about your business, I hope you'll get around to it
soon.

Please note the Navigation Bar on the left-hand side of
this page.  I finally got around to subdividing the
Networking section to make it easier to find things!
Cathedral of Hope
There is a new church in town! Cathedral of Hope-Houston began weekly worship
services on Sunday, January 11, 2009 at 5 p.m. We will continue to meet in the
sanctuary of Grace Lutheran Church at the corner of Waugh and Missouri in the
heart of the Montrose.

Rev. Michael Piazza, Dean & National Pastor of Cathedral of Hope in Dallas, is
preaching a sermon series called "Why I'm Still a Christian" each week. It's a
great series to hear as we all begin a new year. Asked about the series, Rev.
Piazza said:

"I have a friend who said he is not a Christian. Still, he came to church every
Sunday and participated fully. I asked him about this strange behavior, and he
said that, despite the fact that he wasn’t sure he believed what we did, he was
sure that church was a good place. Then he added, 'In this life, there aren’t
nearly enough good places, and, when I find one, I figure it is my responsibility
to support it.'"

Our goal is not to take people away from other churches in Houston. Rather, we
hope that people who haven’t found their own “good place” will join us in creating
one. The Cathedral of Hope Houston is a place where we can reclaim Christianity
as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. If
you are looking for a contemporary, progressive, inclusive place to explore your
faith, we hope you will join us.  You read more about Carthedral of Hope at this
website.

St. John's United Methodist Church
Loyal reader Yvonne files this report:  I attend St. John's Downtown (St.
John's United Methodist Church) and just love it!!!  I have been attending for 4
years and have been an active member (usher) for 3 years.  It is located at
2019 Crawford at Gray.  Pastors Rudy and Juanita Rasmus (husband and wife)
are the pastors.  Their motto is - Tearing Down Walls Building Bridges.  I am
planning to marry my partner and we attended a marriage/engaged couples
session at church and was very warmly received (we were the only lesbian
couple at the session).

We have 8:00 am, 10:00 am and Noon Sunday Services and here is the
website.

Bethel Church UCC
Loyal reader Cynthia reports in:  Bethel is a progressive Christian family of
faith centered on the Word of God as experienced through Prayer, the reading
of the Gospels, and the Holy Sacraments.  Join our Open and Affirming
Congregation as we support one another and our community on the spiritual
journey of life.  The congregation consists of a mix of gay, lesbian, and straight
members.  We also hold a bilingual service on Saturday evening for our Latino
GLBT family.  No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey you are
welcome here - at the Church with Open Arms.   713-861-6670, 1107 Shepherd
Dr Houston, TX  77019.  Check our their
website.

Personally I have been attending Bethel for 5 years - it is a wonderful family
(from our oldest member at 102 to our youngest 2) that supports the GLBT
community and welcomes us to worship as a inclusive family of faith.  I hope
others will join us with a visit to Bethel.

Be sure to join Bethel at their special Christmas Eve service at 7 pm.

Unity Church of  North Houston
Loyal reader Sharon Skievaski and her wife Lianne are very enthusiastic about
their new northside spiritual home, Unity Church of North Houston:  "We have
been in search of some kind of place to pray, meditate, sing, and feel like we
belong. Reverend Shay St. John is a very lovely, spiritual,  & captivating woman.
The other members are also extremely warm, friendly and open-minded. We
have been told since the beginning that "Unity" is listed as a cult. (Grin) That is
definitely not what it feels like. Everybody we have met is so happy to see us
every time we attend. There is an inviting aura and a spiritual journey each
time. "

The Church is located at 11735 Grant Road, and you can find out more about
them at their
website.

Rainbow Covenant Church
Loyal reader, Michaeline June Frost reports in:  "Rainbow Covenant Church is
having its worship services at the Clear Lake Sports & Recreation Center,
located at the corner of Diana Lane and Ramada, at 11 a.m., with coffee & donuts
at 1030 a.m. If you have told you don't belong in church - YOU ARE WELCOME
AT RAINBOW COVENANT CHURCH! God loves you, and wants to have a
relationship with you!".  Check out their
website.

Plymouth United Church of Christ in Spring TX
Loyal reader Kay Hassan writes:  "Though we are not members, Mily and I
attend Plymouth United Church of Christ in Spring Texas.  Located on Louetta
Road, the church is home to several lesbians and lesbian couples.  We love the
small church feel and the various community activities of the church and
recommend it to anyone in the North Houston- Montgomery County area.
Reverend Ginny Brown Daniel is an inspiring pastor who challenges the
congregation to be inclusive in worship and action.  Though there are some
younger people who attend, this church is likely to appeal to women in the 35+
age group.  Here's their
website."

Resurrection Metropolitan Community Church
This church describes itself as "a Christian church that follows God's call to
justice for all people. We build on a rich history of social justice for, and on
behalf of, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Since its
founding in 1968, Metropolitan Community Churches (MCC) have been at the
vanguard of civil and human rights movements as an international advocate for
vulnerable people in places where religious orthodoxy, sexism, transphobia and
homophobia can result in violence and death. MCC has been on the forefront in
the struggle towards marriage equality in the US and other countries worldwide
and continues to be a powerful voice in the LGBTQ equality movement. MCC's
ministry reaches over 43,000 members in over 250 churches in 22 countries
worldwide. Metropolitan Community Churches are on a bold mission to transform
hearts, lives, and history. We are a movement that faithfully proclaims God's
inclusive love for all people and proudly bears witness to the holy integration of
spirituality and sexuality.

The Mission of Resurrection MCC is to demonstrate God's unconditional love to
all people through Christian action. We envision a Christian community that
values diversity and is as diverse and all-encompassing as creation.
