Clubs and  Organizations - Sports and Recreation
Whether your organization is a large charitable group, or
simply a Friday night poker club looking for new
members, my readers might want to know about you.

Team Houston
Team Houston's mission in life is to support gay sports in town.  You can
find out more about the 25+ sports teams in town,  by visiting their

Backgammon:  Women's Backgammon Club
If you love backgammon, and well, who doesn't, this is the group for you.  
(Note:  apparently my clip art program does not like backgammon, since
they had no picture, but perhaps I digress....) Although they have only been
meeting for a couple of weeks, they alreaady have eight regulars.  The gals
are aspiring to grow their group so that they can have tournaments and do
fund-raising events.  The group meets on Sunday afternoons and you can

Badminton:  Houston GLBT Badminton
Wow, I had always spelled it "badmitton".  Ya learn something every day!  
Anywho, Houston GLBT Badminton is a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and
Transgendered badminton club from Houston, Texas! They are just getting
organized, and welcome high-energy GLBT and GLBT-friendly people who
want to help them get it going!  Here is their

Basketball:  Houston Hoops
I can't tell from their msn group if this is a co-ed group, but maybe they
could be if women showed interest!  They are apparently just getting
organized so there isn't a lot of info, but they meet for shoot arounds and
open play at Grady Middle School off of San Felipe and Sage in the Galleria
area on weekends.   Click

Bicycling:  Different Spokes Houston
Different Spokes is  Houston's Gay and Lesbian cycling club, open to all in
the GLBT and GLBT-friendly community with an interest in cycling. Riders
of all skill levels are welcome. They schedule many bike rides, social
events, and encourage club participation in organized rides throughout the
year. They are a fun and diverse group of cyclists with skill levels from
beginner to advanced. Join them for a ride! Don't worry - no one gets left

Billiards:  Three different leagues
The Greater Houston Pocket Billiards League, Inc., known as the GHPBL,
is an 8-ball league open to both men and women, consisting of 3 player
teams and substitutes. Play is at sponsoring establishments in the
Montrose area on Wednesday evenings, beginning at 8:00 pm. There are 2
seasons annually, Summer and Winter, each followed by an end of the
season tournament and an awards banquet. There are also various
tournaments throughout each season and various other events.  Check out

The Houston Metropolitan Billiard League, known as the HMBL, is an
eight-ball billiard league consisting of 3-man teams. Play takes place on
Tuesday evenings at sponsoring establishments in the Greater Montrose
area of Houston. There is a Fall and Spring season with additional
tournaments held throughout the playing seasons, and each season
culminates with an awards banquet.  The HMBL follows the rules and
regulations of the Billiard Congress of America.  Here is their

The Independent Billiard League have a website that doesn't really
explain much about their organization, but I thought I should include them
anyway.
   
Bowling:  Fall Women's Bowling League
Starts Monday Sept 17th, 6:30 pm at Dynamic Lanes
Haul out your funny shoes, girls - it's time for bowling!!!!!!  And this year I
promise not to make any bad bowling puns, like saying that you will have a
ball, or that bowling is right up your alley.  Nope, those bad pun days are
over!

The league starts this Monday, and they will be accepting players and
teams through the end of September.   Dynamic Lanes is located at  6121

Camping:  Houston Outdoor Group (HOG)
The Houston Outdoor Group (HOG) is a social group for gay men, lesbians
and gay friendly persons who enjoy the outdoors. Activities are organized
by HOG members, individually or by ad hoc groups, and are reported in the
monthly newsletter. Events may be typical sports activities (camping,
hiking, etc.) but can also include any social activity, whether indoors or out.  
Call the Hogline at (713) KAMP-OUT for information, a free trial
newsletter or write to HOG, PO Box 980893, Houston, TX 77098. There
are no formal membership requirements except for the annual fee of $20
her household to cover the cost of the newsletter. HOG is affiliated with

Cheerleading:  Cheer Houston
- Are you a cheerleader or gymnast? Ever want to be?
- Still have spirit, but not sure what to do with it?
- Wanna have fun?
Cheer Houston is a Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered cheer squad
from Houston, Texas! They are just getting organized, and welcome
high-energy GLBT and GLBT-friendly people who want to help them get it

Darts:  Montrose Darts League
The Montrose Dart League in Houston is an organization of people who get
together every week and compete against each other and have fun.
Membership is open to all Houston area individuals age 21 and up. League
night is Tuesday with game time set at 7:30pm at various Sanctioned Pubs
in the Montrose area.  Click

Flag Football:  Houston Hurricanes
The Houston Hurricanes are Houston's GLBT flag football team, and they
are recruiting NOW!  They practice each Saturday at 11:00am @ Memorial
Park. The team is gearing up for some exciting upcoming events. Join now.

Golf:  New Yahoo Group for Lesbian Golfers
Currently there are approximately 40 members in this group with a wide
range of golf skills from "really good" to "which end of the club do I hold"
so don't let your skill level be a determining factor on whether you join or
not.  Here are two ways how to subscribe:

2.  Send an
email from the email address that you’d like to subscribe with,
and you will be added automatically. The on-line features won’t be available

Hockey:  Women’s Hockey League meets weekly
Tuesday evenings at Space City Ice Station
Hockey league brings together women and teens at various skill levels who
all share a love of hockey.

Women of all ages and skill levels (even a couple of mother and daughter
duos) are meeting at the Space City Ice Arena on Tuesday evenings with a
common love of hockey … and the league is steadily growing!  To get

Motorcycling:  Montose Motorcycle Riding Club
Montrose Motorcycle Riding Club (MMRC) is dedicated to serving GLBT
and gay-friendly motorcyclists in and around the Houston area.  MMRC is in
it's second year and has a great membership. MMRC promotes responsible
and safe riding while emphasizing having fun and building friendships. The
club welcomes people from all walks of life who ride any brand and style of
motorcycle. They encourage impromptu rides, planned rides, and showing
their support at community events.

Rugby:  Houston Women's Rugby Team
The Houston Women's Rugby Team is a mix of all walks of life, from the
old to the young, and from the experienced to the rookies. Their team
focus in the upcoming 2006 season is to build our numbers, and work
towards becoming a strong and dominant force in the Texas Women's
Rugby Union. This will be accomplished by increased recruitment and by the
continued dedication of our veteran players and Coach.  In addition to the
process of becoming better rugby players, the Houston Women's Rugby
Team provides a friendly and social atmosphere in which all can relax -
rugby style!! The team is commonly found on Saturday nights having a few
too many beers at the local rugby bar - Griff's!! So They hope that you will
consider becoming apart of their growing tradition that is Houston

Running:  Front Runners Houston
Calling all runners, walkers and anyone who seeks a healthy lifestyle via
exercise.  You can find out more about the Front Runners' extensive

Rodeo:  Texas Gay Rodeo Association (TGRA)
TGRA is  a Texas non-profit corporation dedicated to elevating the image
of women and men in the field of rodeo.  Their purposes are to promote
and stage an annual rodeo in Texas and to encourage the participation of
its members in western-related events and to engage in charitable

Sailing:  Q Sail
Q Sail is a group of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered folks based
in Houston who enjoy sailing and power boating.  They are a social group
organized to enjoy recreational boating in the Galveston Bay area.  Contact

Softball:  Houston Women's Softball League (HWSL)
Anyone interested in entering a team or joining a team may contact Denise
@  281-380-3549.  Individuals interested in joining a team may enter
their profile on the league
website. The league will then use your profile to
find a team best suited for the athletes skill level and desired level of
play either competitive or recreational. The league will begin play in March.
   
Softball:  HAS-BIANS, a Recreational Women's Softball Group
Has-Bians is looking for Women Players' Ages 40+, who play
non-competitive, non-league  SOFTBALL.  Membership is FREE to play or
cheer.  Simply go to their

Swimming:  Houston Gaytors
OK, isn't that a cute name for an aquatic group????  Apparently this GLBT
swim group is just getting organized, and welcome high-energy GLBT and
GLBT-friendly people who want to help them get it going!  You can visit

Tennis:  Houston Tennis Club
Founded in 1980, The Houston Tennis Club (HTC) is a non-profit
organization formed to create a framework for promoting athletic
competition in the sport of tennis among its members. HTC does not
discriminate or deny membership on the basis of race, gender, sexual
orientation, religion or creed.  HTC has a roster of players ranging from
novice to advanced tournament players. It is also home to the annual
HOUTEX tennis tournament and charity fundraiser. The HOUTEX
tournament is one of the oldest and most prestigious gay tennis
tournaments in the United States and is sanctioned by the Gay and Lesbian
Tennis Association (GLTA), a member organization of the United States
Tennis Association (USTA). In 2003, HOUTEX rated #10 in the GLTA Top
10 Tournaments based on entries and also #10 in the Top 10 Growing
